Ndrangheta ran a €2 billion money-laundering operation through Malta-based online betting

Investigations into Malta’s gaming sector could soon be stepped up in the wake of an anti-Mafia probe and European Union-wide legislative changes, Europe’s law enforcement agency said.

In a financial intelligence report, Europol said yesterday the recent inclusion of remote gaming in the EU’s anti-money-laundering laws could have a “significant effect” on the Maltese sector.

Shining a spotlight on the local industry, the report details how the Calabrian organised crime syndicate, the ’Ndrangheta, ran a €2 billion money-laundering operation through online betting companies on the island. The case, from 2015, rocked the gaming industry after six remote gambling companies were linked to the international investigation, along with a number of local property holdings.

888 slumps following record UK fine

888 experienced a pre-tax loss in the first half of 2017 despite a 9% leap in revenues.

The operator fell into the red after being hit for $50.8m over a record £7.8m ($10m/€8.5m) fine in the UK for failing to protect vulnerable customers and a potential tax bill in Germany.

In a trading update, the company announced a pre-tax loss of $17.3m in the six months to June 30, from a pre-tax profit of $27.8m in the same period a year earlier.

888 saw a 9% year-on-year increase in revenue at a constant currency to $270m for H1.

LeoVegas to exit Australia

LeoVegas has become the latest major operator to announce it is withdrawing from the Australian market in response to new gambling regulations.

Earlier this month, the Australian Senate moved to pass the Interactive Gambling Amendment Bill, which includes legislation that bans all remote operators from offering online poker and in-play sports betting to punters in the country.

Betsson CEO steps down with immediate effect

Ulrik Bengtsson will step down as president and CEO of Betsson AB with immediate effect after a decision on his departure was taken by the board of directors and Mr Bengtsson himself.

No reason was given for this shock departure, with a company spokesman telling the Times of Malta that the board was happy with both Betsson's results and strategy.

"When the Board and the CEO disagree, it is normal procedure that the CEO leaves. Ulrik has chosen to leave immediately," she said.

The company grew year-on-year revenues by 26% to €123.2 million in the second quarter of 2017, driven by a strong performance from its core casino component and also sportsbook.
